I was quite impressed with this film. I do not watch a lot of children's films, so, when this came recommended to me I was like, okay, I will check it out but it will probably be mediocre. Fortunately, I was wrong. It does have a few slow moments. It wasn't that cheesy, though there are bits of cheese sprinkled here and there, but not enough to make one groan. You got ABIGAIL BRESLIN (LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE) who is simply a doll and quite talented as the spunky KIT KITTREDGE, how can you not love a character with a name like KIT? This film is part of a 4-disc series of stories about AMERICAN girls, which I have not seen. I think the girls are based on dolls. Anyhoo, this story is set in THE GREAT DEPRESSION and KIT tries to save her family from the poorhouse. The cast is strong with actors like STANLEY TUCCI, JOAN CUSACK, JULIA ORMOND and CHRIS O'DONNELL. The story is simple but well told, slightly predictable but a few twists make it refreshing. The costumes are good as are the sets, who just doesn't love a DEPRESSION ERA look? I really think what saves this film from becoming just another okay Children's movie is the fine acting. The actors are incredibly watchable and intelligent. They keep you engaged, throughout. Sadly, all future movies of this series do not contain this one's special recipe for success: ABIGAIL BRESLIN. However, she will be in tons of other movies I am sure. Yay!

Toodles,

Mitzi
