10/12/06 - PEARL JAM'S Early Years Captured in New Photo Book
"5X1: Pearl Jam Through the Eye of Lance Mercer," features over 180 previously unreleased photos of Pearl Jam that document the first 5 years of the bands incarnation. The book went on
sale yesterday, October 11th, at
www.pearljam.com to Pearl Jam's fan club members for $40.
This is Mercer's second photo book for the band. He also collaborated with photographer Charles Peterson on the 1998 Pearl Jam photo book "Place/Date,". He initially joined forces with Pearl Jam in 1992 and says that "For five years, I focused on photographing Pearl Jam, shooting as close to the action as possible," "Pearl Jam was a moving target. I learned to adjust to the surroundings and never went anywhere without my camera." In a statement on the bands website
The new book also includes essays from musicians such as Bruce Springsteen, Pete Townshend, Michael Stipe and Ben Harper, along with other entries from activist Gloria Steinem, director Cameron Crowe, actor Tim Robbins and surfer Kelly Slater.
