10/03/06 - U2 and GREEN DAY to record Classic Tune Together

U2 and Green Day hope to inspire the world to help rebuild the battered bayou city's musical culture. U2 and Green Day have combined to produce a studio-recorded version of The Saints Are Coming. The song originally was recorded by a Scottish punk band called the Skids in 1978. The U2 and Green Day's studio version was produced by Rick Rubin and recorded at the legendary Abbey Road studios in London, England. It will be available for download on Oct. 30, and a CD single will be in stores on Nov. 7.

Proceeds from the song will aid Music Rising, a charity working with musicians affected by Hurricane Katrina. The charity was set up by The Edge of U2, producer Bob Ezrin and Gibson Guitars, and the goal is to replace musical instruments lost during Hurricane Katrina. Green Day singer Billie Joe Armstrong says "One year later, people continue to be devastated by Katrina's effects. We hope that by collaborating with U2, we'll remind the public that people of the Gulf Coast are still suffering and still need help to rebuild their lives."

The two super-groups performed a live version of The Saints Are Coming prior to the Saints-Atlanta Falcons game on Monday Night Football earlier this week. It was the first NFL game back at the New Orleans Superdome since Hurricane Katrina devastated the city in 2005, and on Monday the Saints throttled the Falcons in surprisingly convincing fashion.
