FREAKS & GEEKS: THE COMPLETE SERIES
- Mitzi J. Johnson

Howdy, all. I hope the weather is nice where you are. It has not been so nice for me, as I have not been able to escape to Maui, as planned. I was glad to see the Saints win the Superbowl. I love New Orleans. I have to admit that I had one too many of those Hurricane drinks in my youth. Whew! They definately blow you away. I love the lone saxophone players in the middle of night in the French Quarter and those fab scwimp po'boys!!! What 'bout some red beans and rice? Ah, as Tom Waits sings, "I wish I was in New Orleans!"

I kept hearing people talk about this series and I put it on my list and, well, I finally got to it and was pleasantly surprised to see the names Judd Apatow, James Franco and Seth Rogen. The series was released in 1999. That was before I even knew their names, how very exciting!!! So, it is set in a Detroit high school in the early 1980's. There are the Freaks: which includes one of the main characters,Lindsay well played by LINDA CARDELLINI and her friends, JAMES FRANCO and SETH ROGEN. Then, there are the Geeks: headed by Lindsay's younger bro Sam,, perfectly played by JOHN FRANCIS DALY and his buddies. That's the basic premise of a show that ran only one season. I say why, only one season? It was definately better than "TheOC", and that had 4 seasons. Sadly, this love affair was cut short.

The music is fab. The costumes are brilliant. The script, really funny and at some times hilarious. The attention to detail of that period is right on. I love the STAR WARS references as, I was a fan. Does that make me a Geek? Hmmm. The guidance counselor and the gym teacher were my two fave supporting roles. I would watch some scenes with them over just too laugh again. The young SETH ROGEN, JAMES FRANCO and JASON SEGEL, are very funny and my they are sooo young. I just loved seeing a show about the 80's as I actually remember them. All the actors are really well cast and very talented. Most of all it is just funny...and the music is divine...Bob Segar, The Who, The Grateful Dead, Led Zeppellin and on and on and on. But mostly I found an innocence of that period, that I can see existed, but you have to look back at it to see it. Does that make sense? Ok, now go watch it.
